Haylee and Emily Orellana were acknowledged by North Carolina Governor Josh Stein during his State of the State Address for their contributions to healthcare and community service. The recognition took place on Wednesday night, highlighting the sisters' achievements in addressing local healthcare needs.
Emily Orellana is currently a student nurse intern in the ICU and is set to graduate from Surry Community College’s Nursing ADN Program this May. She plans to join Northern Regional Hospital as a registered nurse after graduation. Her sister, Haylee Orellana, is a first-year ADN student and CNA-Apprentice on Med-Surg at the same college, aiming to graduate in May 2026 with an interest in labor and delivery.
Governor Stein praised both sisters for their roles in tackling local healthcare challenges. He noted that "Northern Regional Hospital in Mount Airy had a nursing shortage," which led to collaboration with Surry Yadkin Works and Surry Community College to create an apprenticeship program. This initiative connected Emily Orellana with Northern Regional while she was still in high school, allowing her to earn her certified nursing credential early on. Inspired by Emily's journey, Haylee followed suit, pursuing her own path in nursing.
Governor Stein further stated: “Thanks to this apprenticeship program, Northern Regional Hospital is training its next generation of healthcare workers, homegrown, and has completely eliminated its dependence on traveling nurses.”
The recognition underscores Northern Regional Hospital’s "Grow Our Own" strategy aimed at fostering local talent through partnerships with educational institutions like Surry Community College and workforce organizations such as Surry Yadkin Works. This approach addresses community healthcare workforce needs by offering opportunities for local students within the hospital.
Emily and Haylee's dedication exemplifies this strategy's success. Their efforts are part of ensuring that skilled professionals who are committed to their community continue serving it effectively.
