The City of Mount Airy is currently accepting applications for the position of FULL TIME FIREFIGHTER. Below is a description of the position:
A Firefighter performs general duty work involved in fighting fire and handling any related fire fighting tasks assigned. Work is often under stressful emergency conditions and frequently involves personal hazards. Work standards and procedures are well established and understood and work is under the command of higher officers on the scene.
Requirements include:
• Working knowledge of fire fighting methods and techniques, apparatus driving and pumping, and knowledge of hydrants
• Skill in the use of firefighting equipment
• Working knowledge of the most current edition of the International Fire Code with North Carolina Amendments and any other referenced materials.
Desirable Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent and some firefighting experience are required.
Special Requirements:
• Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B driver’s license within 6 month probationary period.
• Obtain and maintain Level II Firefighter Certification within 12 months of hire.
• Obtain and maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification within 12 months of hire.
• Obtain and maintain Emergency Vehicle Driver Certification within 12 months of hire.
• Obtain and maintain Level I Fire Inspector Certification within 24 months after completion of initial employee 6 month probationary period.
• Willingness to complete fire training requirements of the Department.
• Candidate must reside in Surry County or a county adjoining Surry to be considered for this position.
