Surry Community College issued the following announcement on February 7.
The Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Society at Surry Community College was recently awarded a $3,000 grant from Walmart Giving. The Alpha Xi Tau Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Society at Surry Community College was recently awarded a $3,000 grant from Walmart Giving.
The SCC’s PTK chapter applied for this grant as a yearly college project. Their goal was to help the Student Government Association to set up a student outreach and resource center.
Surry Community College’s PTK Chapter Advisor Dr. Kathleen Fowler says, “The new center, a.k.a., The Knights Armory will provide food, clothing, hygiene items, and supplies to students struggling with food and housing insecurities as well as providing resource information for students struggling with domestic violence, substance abuse, and mental health challenges. Our hope is that by making it easier for students to access the resources they need outside of the classroom, they will be able to stay in school, complete their programs, and graduate to a brighter future."
William Pruitt, Store Manager, Mount Airy Walmart, was excited that Walmart could help with this worthwhile project.
"Walmart likes to give back to our local communities through grants like this one for the Knights Armory that will support students outside of the classroom, so they can be successful inside the classroom. We are proud to help fund this student outreach project at Surry Community College," said Pruitt.
Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. The society is made up of more than 3.5 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in 11 nations.
