Mask Mandates to Expire

Coronavirus

Town of North Wilkesboro issued the following announcement on October 25.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TOWNS OF WILKESBORO AND NORTH WILKESBORO RECOMMEND MASKS; MASK MANDATE NOT RENEWED

[WILKESBORO, NC, October 29, 2021] – Since September 1, 2021, State of Emergency declarations requiring face coverings be worn inside establishments open to the public have been in effect in the towns of Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro. The current requirement is scheduled to end on October 31, 2021.

Due to falling case counts and stabilizing hospitalization figures, the Mayors of Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro, in consultation with their respective elected boards, Wilkes Health, and Wilkes Medical Center, have decided not to renew the mask mandate for another month.

North Wilkesboro Mayor Robert Johnson signed a resolution codifying this action today, and Wilkesboro Mayor Mike Inscore plans to do so after the meeting of the Wilkesboro Town Council this coming Monday evening.

However, as the contagious Delta variant circulates and flu season emerges, the towns continue to recommend that residents wear masks, wash hands, and wait six feet apart while in public. Due to the virus’s ability to spread from asymptomatic or even pre-symptomatic individuals, indoor public settings remain risky sites of substantial transmission for unmasked individuals.

Business establishments may continue to enforce voluntary mask requirements, and refuse service to those who fail to wear a face covering (with certain exceptions such as children younger than two, restaurant dining, bona fide medical exemptions, etc.). Masks are still required in health care settings such as hospitals and clinics. Upon request, the municipal police forces will support businesses’ refusal right by removing noncompliant individuals in accordance with North Carolina state trespassing laws.
