Wilkes Community College issued the following announcement on October 8.
Wilkes Community College welcomes Wanda Beck as the new director of the Alleghany Center. The position became vacant when Susan Nilo retired earlier this year.
Of her new position, Beck stated, “I am very excited about joining the Wilkes Community College family and the Alleghany community as the Director of the Alleghany Center. I look forward to developing partnerships to further enhance quality education and the economic development of Alleghany County.”
Beck has over 10 years of community college experience, serving most recently as the Director of Customized Training at Brunswick Community College and prior to that as Director of the Archdale & Randleman Centers and the Director of Workforce Development & Continuing Education for Randolph Community College.
During her time at Randolph and Brunswick Community colleges, Beck developed collaborative partnerships with local community organizations, employers, and public schools, facilitating programs such as an annual Substance Use Disorder & Mental Health Symposium, MFG Day, the addition of Con Ed Career & College Pathways into the local high schools, the expansion of training for the local building trades profession, and launching of a leadership program.
Prior to entering the educational field, Beck had a successful career that spanned over 22 years in advanced manufacturing, where she held senior leadership roles for two Fortune 100 international corporations (Unilever and PepsiCo). It was her desire to “give back” and help others achieve their dreams that led Beck to change careers to higher education.
WCC VP of Instruction, Dr. Yolanda Wilson stated, “We are incredibly excited to welcome Wanda as our new Director of the Alleghany Center. Her wealth of experience as a leader in business and industry as well as her background in workforce development give her a unique lens as she engages with and supports the citizens of Alleghany County. She will be an excellent addition to the Alleghany Center team and our Wilkes Community College family.”
