Nestle Purina is building a $450 million pet food plant at the former MillerCoors brewery in Eden, Rep. Kyle Hall (R-Rockingham) said while praising the project.
“Huge news," the Republican legislator said in a Sept. 30 Facebook post. “Starting in 2022, the pet food company plans to hire 300 with an average wage of $43,053.”
The 1,355-acre property straddles the North Carolina-Virginia line, the Triad Business Journal reported in September.
The project makes the pet-food company eligible for up to $50 million in state and local incentives if it meets hiring and investment benchmarks, the Triad Business Journal reported.
Ohio and Kentucky were also considered for the project, with Ohio offering $42 million in incentives and Kentucky $40 million, the story said.
The brewery initially started operation 1978 and before closing in 2016, with approximately 520 employees losing their jobs, the Triad Business Journal reported. It won the "brewery of the year" award honors from MillerCoors three times between 2011 and 2015.
At its peak, the brewery employed 1,500 people, the Triad Business Journal reported.
