The North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) sued to remove the Opportunity Scholarship program on July 27, which supporters say is a program designed to help low- and middle-income families pay for private education for their children.
The association, which represents educators in North Carolina, sued the program after Gov. Roy Cooper has said he wanted to defund the initiative, Senate President Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) posted to his Medium press website on July 28.
Opportunity Scholarship helps parents be able to make a choice in their children's education. It has been ruled in the past that the program is constitutional and the North Carolina Supreme Court made a ruling that states public education funds can go toward this program.
“The far-left NCAE says it cares about equity in schooling, but it’s suing to ensure low-income families can’t afford to send their children to private school," Sen. Deanna Ballard (R-Watauga) said in the news release. "Nobody disputes that children will suffer from public school closures, yet this suit would strip low-income children of the only chance they have to attend private schools, which are open for in-class instruction.”
