The City of Mount Airy announced on Mar. 24 that its annual city-wide Spring Cleanup will take place from Monday, April 6 through Friday, April 10, and again from Monday, April 13 through Friday, April 17. The initiative is organized by the Public Works Department and applies to residential properties only.
The Spring Cleanup aims to help residents dispose of large or unusual household items that are not typically collected during regular trash pickup. During these two weeks, residents are encouraged to place extra items at the curb beside their trash cart on their usual collection day.
According to the announcement, items eligible for pickup include appliances; up to twelve tires per residence (with or without rims); building materials generated by homeowners (excluding concrete, masonry, and soil); carpet of any size; large furniture; bicycles or tricycles; loose leaves; limbs exceeding three inches in diameter (which must be separated from smaller brush); and old gas grills without gas cylinders.
Due to environmental regulations, paint, pesticides, herbicides, solvents, and chemicals cannot be collected during this event. However, Surry County hosts an annual disposal event at Veterans Park in the fall where these materials can be taken.
Residents with questions about acceptable items or procedures are encouraged to contact the Public Works Department at 336-786-3580.
